What’s inside a weighted blanket?
Remember what it was like when you were younger? Grabbing a blanket and wrapping yourself into the tightest burrito you can? Weighted blankets are like that, but more adult-y. They’re made from a bunch of different materials, including cotton, polyester and even glass beads. The weight itself comes from these (typically) glass beads sewn into the fabric itself. This weight provides a hug-like sensation that can help you relax!
The history of weighted blankets and their therapeutic benefits.
Weighted blankets have stemmed from early research for the effects of pressure and weight on autistic patients. Temple Grandin, an american scientist invented a tool called the Hug Machine. Prior to the hug machine, several studies had suggested that deep touch pressure would be therapeutically beneficial for patients with autism. Pulling from the abstract of Temple’s own paper:
“At present, there are increasing anecdotal reports of the clinical value of the squeeze machine, including suggestions that it can be used to reduce required doses of psychostimulant medications. More clinical studies are needed to evaluate the potential role of this seemingly beneficial form of “physiological” stimulation.”
In one randomized controlled study in 2020, 120 patients with a variety of disorders including generalized anxiety, depressive, and bipolar were randomized (1:1) to a light blanket or a weighted blanket. After 4 weeks these patiences all were more wakeful during the day, and their insomnia symptoms were lowered. After the study had concluded, light blanket patients were then switched to the weighted blankets, and they also experienced the same improvements in sleep quality and insomnia reduction!
How weighted blankets are made.
Weighted blankets are exactly what they sound like. Blankets, that are weighted. Generally speaking weighted blankets consist of two parts, the fabric, and the weight. Occasionally there’s a third piece, a cover. The soft fabrics are typically cotton or fleece, stitched in a patchwork fashion. Inside those patches, you’ll find glass or plastic beads, providing the weight and heft to the blanket!
How to choose the right weighted blanket for you?
Perhaps the most important factor in picking your blanket is the weight. How much you weigh vs how much the blanket weighs is a typical ratio to consider. Heavier people will tend to need more weight to feel the same effects. Most people seem to prefer a blanket that’s weighted at 10% of their body weight. We’ve provided a handy chart to see what weight might be right for you.
It’s also important to think about temperature sensitivity, if you purchase a fleece lined weighted blanket, is that going to be too hot for you in the summer?
Weighted blankets make a great addition to any home
Weighted blankets have risen in popularity, and for good reason! I use one myself in the winter months, and it feels great. The weight pushes you down just enough to feel like you’re having a nice warm hug! If you suffer from anxiety or insomnia, it may be a good option to test out. Sleep on it!
