Can you meditate in the shower? (Of course!)

Meditation is often seen as something that needs to be done in a peaceful setting; a quiet room or comfortable chair are often the preferred locations for traditional meditation. Everyone is busy, and time schedules can change. We recommend trying to really carve out that time for yourself it’s important to respect that time– but life happens… So, can you meditate in the shower?

Of course! In fact, meditation in the shower can be one of the best ways to fit in a practice during a busy day. Plus, there are some unique benefits to meditating in the shower that you may not have considered.

Hot showers can be incredibly relaxing and help to loosen up tight muscles. The water is a constant drum and itself can be used as your object of meditation! There’s also the great metaphor for ‘washing away your worries’ as well. Of course, it’s important that you don’t slip and hurt yourself – but overall this form of meditation can provide some much needed ‘me-time’ when life gets hectic.

So, how does where you meditate effect your practice? Well, there is evidence to suggest that different environments can have an impact on our ability to concentrate and relax more deeply. As mentioned before, hot showers are very calming and being surrounded by steam and the steady sound of water also helps us to block out distractions from outside noise – letting us relax and focus on our inner feelings and thoughts.

Additionally, it’s often a good idea to occasionally associate your practice with ‘mundane’ activities. If we begin to focus on our breath during showers or doing the dishes, or taking out the trash, it allows the meditative practice to spill into our everyday lives, which is the ultimate goal of meditation!

So if you haven’t tried meditating in the shower yet – give it a go! I’ve been doing it for years!
